John's family consists of two teenage stepsons, a daughter, son, two cats, dog, hamster, two turtles, and a salamander. Originally from Illinois, John raced as a junior and then took a little break for about 20 years, living in various places including Okinawa for 4 years. He moved to Colorado in 1997 and returned to racing as a Mt. Biker, racing in the Sport Category for a couple of years. The road bug returned and 2009 will mark his fourth season racing on the pavement.

A peek into John's life - "A couple of winters ago when we got all that snow I invited some teammates over for a trainer ride in my newly finished basement. Some invited friends, so we ended up with about 13 of use sweating for a couple of hours as we watched the snow fall. A good time was had by all, but my wife wasn't too happy that our new basement smelled like a high school gym locker for a couple of days. Guess I underestimated how much stench a gaggle of Lance wannnabees can make. Next time it will be in the garage with the door open. "
